Producer Minor Morgan, with North Valley Organics, is an on-going Soil Health Demonstration site and partner with the USDA-NRCS and Soil Health Division in teaching the principles/concepts on how to implement Soil Health Management Systems in the arid SW
From:
Rudy Garcia, Regional Soil Health Specialist, Soil Health Division
To:
Minor Morgan, Organic Vegetable Producer (North Valley Organics)

Purpose: This letter acknowledges that producer Minor Morgan, with North Valley Organics, is a soil health partner with the USDA-NRCS and Soil Health Division, where his organic vegetable production is used as an demonstration site of an operation that is using a comprehensive Soil Health Management System (SHMS) for the arid SW.

Summary:

Minor Morgan, with North Valley Organics, is allowing the USDA-NRCS and Soil Health Division to use his organic vegetable farm as a training site for teaching the following components of a SHMS:

  •  Drip Irrigation
  •  Irrigation Water Mgt.
  •  Cover Crops
  •  Diverse Crop Rotations
  •  Composting
  •  Compost Teas
  •  Pollinator and Wildlife Habitat
  •  Mulching
  •  Integrated Pest Mgt.
  •  Nutrient Mgt.

Minor Morgan has been assisting the NM NRCS for many years on various soil health outreach educational and technical efforts, including teaching about soil health practices, site-visits to his operation to explain what, how and why he uses a SHMS to achieve soil health building. Minor continues to be an important advocate for soil health and is using his site to teach and demonstrate how all the components of a SHMS fit into an operation that builds healthy and productive soils, that are economically viable, sustainable and that achieve many other environmental benefits (e.g., wildlife habitat, pollinators, water conservation, etc.).

The USDA-NRCS Soil Health Division is grateful for Minor’s participation as an advocate and partner for small-scale vegetable production and his willingness to share his vast knowledge with many producers and NRCS employees and many other conservation partners.
